LIQUID MIND
Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience
(Real Music)

In 2007, Real Music released a dreamy collection of slow sedative music by Liquid Mind (aka Chuck Wild), selected from the previous eight albums by the venerable electronic music artist.

Conceived from the start by composer and keyboard virtuoso Chuck Wild, Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience features a cross-section of album tracks representing 8 different Liquid Mind albums, in addition to a previously unreleased track called “I Am Willing”.

Musically, Relax is very much in the signature Liquid Mind style of slow-moving, meditative electronic music instrumentals that are perfect for a variety of relaxation and reflection. If you’re looking for beat-heavy, pulsating, electronic-based synth music, this isn’t it.

Instead, the focus here is on unwinding the body and spirit and releasing the captive mind through the magic of still, linear sound waves of electronic synth music that works to undo tension and ameliorate blood pressure build-up.

One of the great compilations of healing electronic sounds, Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience takes Chuck Wild and Liquid Mind back to the true purpose and origins of Real Music, the label that pioneered the release of New Age music albums as a force for health-related improvements in your life through the power of healing sounds.

Even with its remedial qualities, synth and electronic music fans will nevertheless appreciate the sonic attractions of Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience and the upside is, it will invariably assist them in removing the stress that so much millennial life can induce in our nervous systems.

The unreleased track here, “I Am Willing” is a veritable classic of the New Age style and is clearly a masterpiece from the vast back catalog of Liquid Mind titles. Deep in the spirit of more recent albums from Liquid Mind, including 2020’s Mindfulness and 2022’s Liquid Mind XIV: Simplicity, the 2007 CD release of Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience is certainly time well spent for long time fans of Liquid Mind and newcomers alike.

mwe3.com speaks to Chuck Wild of Liquid Mind about Relax
(The following interview took place on November 4th 2023)

mwe3: Going back in time, how did the release of Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience come together? The album still stands as a great achievement of New Age instrumental music. What a great team you and Real Music made by releasing so many amazing albums.

Chuck Wild: While the titles of the Liquid Mind albums have always related to my personal journey of healing and learning to slow down and “relax”, Terence Yallop, the owner of Real Music, pointed out to me in 2006 that I had never used the words “relax” or “relaxation” in a title.

As well, he thought it would be beneficial to release a “collection” with one new piece, to give listeners a sample of the early Liquid Mind albums. Terence came up with the title Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience, to set it apart from my numbered albums which contain only new pieces.

mwe3: What was your musical objective regarding the release of Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience? The cover art is also very sublime and compliments the music.

Chuck Wild: Relax was a collection of my favorite tracks, trying to create a variety sonically from the early Liquid Mind albums, but also songs I particularly related to. Richard Laeton-Balaram created the beautiful cover, which I’ve always loved… the turtle, an icon of slowness, floating in space, illuminated by a mysterious beam of light.

mwe3: Can you say something about the previously unreleased track included on the Relax album called “I Am Willing”?

Chuck Wild: The one new track was “I Am Willing”, and reflected my emotional/mental state of mind in 2006. I’ve learned over the years the importance of willingness, especially when trying to change something about myself, striving to be a better person and healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. For me, being willing is always the first step, so the song was an expression about my state of mind.

mwe3: What was going on in your life around the time you released the Liquid Mind Relax compilation?

Chuck Wild: The release year, 2007, was a challenging one for me personally, but also one of huge positive changes in the industry.  I was commuting every few weeks to Kansas City to care for Dad, who was 98 at the time, and at the same time trying to create a little new music on the short trips back to Hollywood.

mwe3: There were also some significant changes going on in the music world back in 2007.

Chuck Wild: In 2007 there were huge changes going on in the music world… though iTunes’ MP3 download system had been around since 2001, in 2007 Pandora, Amazon Music and Spotify all came into the streaming world, and Relax: A Liquid Mind Experience surprisingly caught on quite quickly and started receiving significant digital streams.  I’d say that was a turning moment for me, knowing that my music could reach people all over the world, without having to manufacture/sell CDs.  It’s long been a dream for me that Liquid Mind could reach every person in the world it could help, and the digital revolution beginning to accelerate in 2007 was a huge step forward.
