JACK BRUCE & ROBIN TROWER
Seven Moons Live
(Ruf Records)

On March 17th, 2008 I had the opportunity to interview both Robin Trower and Jack Bruce about their joint effort Seven Moons. One of the great comeback stories of the double 0’s, Seven Moons was brought to the stage, live on a rare early 2009 tour of Europe. Of course, joining Jack and Robin on the Seven Moons studio CD and live concert tour was fusion drumming master Gary Husband and the net results of their live shows can be seen and heard on the 2009 DVD/CD release of Seven Moons Live. The live CD is very well mixed, crisp and clear but the DVD is the real cake here, as in have your cake and hear it too! The DVD features mostly faithful live renditions of Jack, Robin and Gary playing just about the entire Seven Moons album along with a helpful heaping of Cream classics including “Sunshine Of Your Love” and “White Room.” I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since the Fall 2005 Cream reunion and Jack is even in better form here performing the tracks that he and Robin worked magic with on the Seven Moons studio album. This particular night, caught live on CD and DVD, was culled from a February 28th, 2009 gig in Holland. Trower’s guitar playing and Jack’s bass work builds up an uncanny musical ESP in this live setting while the energetic Gary Husband comes across like a modern Ginger Baker for the 21st century, soaked in sweat and pounding out the big beat for the cool, calm and collected Bruce and Trower, who barely break a sweat, they’re just that composed. One pleasant surprise among the new Seven Moons live cuts and the Cream covers is a rare, fantastic reworking of a track entitled “Carmen,” that was originally recorded by Jack and Robin in their BLT group era circa 1981. Seven Moons Live will be huge among the fan base of all three of these top recording legends. Just goes to show that playing together, these three musicians can still create a special groundbreaking vibe. It may be too much to ask for, but let’s hope Robin and Jack and Gary get another great chance to make an album as cool as Seven Moons again. www.RobinTrower.com www.JackBruce.com www.GaryHusband.com www.rufrecords.de
