NATASCHA SOHL
Dirty Little Word
(Granite Music)

Girl groups, from the Shangri-La's to The Bangles, have rocked their way to the top of the pop world. On her 2009 CD, Dirty Little Word, Natascha Sohl will have little or no effort convincing music fans of her own value as a pop star on the rise. On Dirty Little Word the U.K. based Sohl comes across as a seasoned pro with a rock solid track lineup that makes The Bangles seem tame at this point in time. Recorded in NYC with a hand from writer/producer/guitarist Russ DeSalvo and his team, Dirty Little Word wipes the slate clean and establishes Sohl as a modern pop force to be reckoned with. Even more impressive is the way Sohl and DeSalvo master their studio sound in a way that makes the most of her intriguing presence while adding in some intriguing twists and turns along the way. Also worth noting is the excellent digi-pak CD artwork and colorful lyric booklet that feature the alluring songstress in range of color pics. Dirty Little Word is slated for CD release in April 2009.

Musical Background

Natascha: I’ve always loved music for as long as I can remember and actually attempted to write my first song when I was 8 years old – it wasn’t very good!! There was always music like Queen, Aerosmith and Dire Straits in the house when I was little so I guess I was going to be into some guitar based music! I always loved to sing but although I tried a little never really got good at the guitar I can play about 6 chords badly, so I wouldn’t want to subject anyone to that, that’s why I leave that bit to the pro’s like Russ!

Russ: I started in NYC as a studio session player. One of my early great experiences in NY was playing with Carlos Santana in the middle 80's as well as Narada Michael Walden and got to spend some time with John McLaughlin as well. As an arranger/guitar player I played on many records for Sony through 2004 where I met I met my great friend and legendary mixer Mick Guzauski. I have continued playing guitar on almost all of the records I now independently produce.

New CD

Natascha: My new album is called Dirty Little Word and is full of guitar driven rock pop gems! The album was recorded in Pie Studios in N.Y., Cove studios in N.Y. and also Russ’s own studio, also in N.Y.! I was pretty excited when I got there to discover that Aerosmith have recorded a lot in Pie too. I felt we were in very good company!

Russ: Dirty Little Word was recorded at 2 studios in N.Y. The basic tracking was done at Pie recording studio in Glen Cove, N.Y. Pie is a kinda legendary studio that both Aerosmith and Keith Richards have used under the radar and out of the public eye. The beautiful thing about Pie is that although a modern pro-tool HD studio it is steeped in great analog tradition. They offer the only fully discrete Neve 8078 console on the east coast. The warmth and fatness of that legendary console can definitely be felt in Natascha's CD.

Musical Influences

Natascha: Well as I mentioned I listened to a lot of Queen as a kid, who I think were one of the best bands ever! Growing up I listen to bands like Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, No Doubt, Garbage and Alanis Morissette, amongst other things!! I think as a young girl when Jagged Little Pill came out, that had quite a lot of influence on me. I thought it was a great album. A guitarist that I really love now is John Mayer, I just think he writes great songs and has an amazing feel.

Russ: My favorite guitarists are: Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Allan Holdsworth, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, David Gilmore. Interestingly enough some of my great musical influences were more from the song-writing point of view than purely guitar driven records. Certainly The Beatles, Aerosmith, AC/DC, James Taylor, Sting, even a great deal of the great Motown and Stax recordings had a huge influence on me as guitarist.
